Texel is a great island for children to explore. Special routes make walking a real experience for them.
Particularly popular is the Sommeltjespad path in De Dennen. Sommeltjes are earthlings from Texel who, according to old stories, come to life at night and then dance on the Sommeltjesberg near De Waal. They show children the way on the Sommeltjespad. And if you look around carefully, you will see sommeltjes everywhere in the forest. The starting point of the Sommeltjespad is on Pelikaanweg near De Koog.
It is fun to combine a walk in the woods with children with a visit to a playground. There are various playgrounds in De Dennen, such as the playground on Ploeglanderweg, the sandpit near Eksterlaan and the large play pit between Nattevlakweg and Heidevlakweg.
There are also special forest playgrounds where children can play outside the paths and build huts with the branches lying around in the forest. Forest play areas are marked with an icon of a child building a hut. You can find the forest playgrounds at the following locations:
Even with a pram you can make lovely walks on Texel. The paved footpaths suitable for this are clearly marked in the booklet Eilandroutes. It also includes the 'Climb and play' children's walk.
