In the north of Texel, at De Vlijt airfield, you will find the Aviation and War Museum Texel. Aviation on Texel In the museum you can learn everything about the history of aviation and the consequences of the Second World War for Texel. Texel has a close relationship with aviation. The history of Texel International Airport goes back to 1937, when De Vlijt airport was opened in the Eierland polder. And as early as 1917 there was a naval air base for seaplanes on the southern tip of Texel. Exhibitions The period during the Second World War is extensively discussed. The exhibition about the period 1940-1945 is impressive. The Russian war, the dramatic uprising of Georgian soldiers in German military service, plays a central role in this. This turned Texel into 'Europe's last battlefield' in April 1945. Extensive attention is also paid to the Atlantic Wall and the air war above Texel. 3D Audio Tour It is possible to follow a 3D audio tour through bunker De Vlijt during your museum visit. This is located opposite the museum. During the visit to the bunker, you will be taken into conversations and memories of the period during the Georgian uprising. The audio tour is only available Wednesday through Saturday at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and Sunday only at 3:00 PM.
