During your Texel holiday, a visit to one of the many museums should not be missed. But which museum is right for you? We will gladly help you choose.
The picturesque Museum Waelstee shows you how (peasant) life used to be on Texel. The museum is located in a charming old farmhouse in De Waal, Texel's oldest village. In Maritiem- en Juttersmuseum Flora you will learn everything about the island's beachcomber past. Thousands of beach finds are exhibited here! Museum Kaap Skil is a large museum including a room-filling model with 160 reconstructed ships and the famous exhibition about the palmwood wreck, where the dress can be viewed. The Oudheidkamer is one of the oldest houses on Texel with furnishings from grandma's time. In 't Walvisvaarders Huisje you can see the original bedsteads and utensils from the old days. Tours and lectures are regularly given here.
Aviation and War Museum is located near the airport, gives you an overview of the island's long flying history and tells the story of the Georgian Revolt. The Texel Lighthouse played a role in World War II. Bullet holes can still be seen today because the old, shot-up tower was left standing within a new tower wall. You can walk between the walls to see them. Also interesting: a visit to the Texel bunkers.
Animal lovers will feast their eyes at Ecomare. See the sheltered seals up close or discover the fish, crabs, starfish, sharks, rays, sea anemones, shellfish and lobsters that live in the Wadden and North Seas. You can also visit the bird sanctuary and there is a whale room with skeletons of whales and dolphins. There are also several exhibitions on the Wadden, North Sea and nature on Texel. Do you find the Texel sheep interesting? Then don't miss a visit to the Sheep Museum!
Many museums on Texel are also (or especially!) fun for children. Take them to see the animals at Ecomare, climb the lighthouse together or have fun for hours at Museum Kaap Skil. Some museums have (temporary) exhibitions or activities especially aimed at children, such as the Flora treasure hunt, the puzzle tour at Waelstee or the bingo card at Kaap Skil.
On Texel, there are regular exhibitions and displays of Texels work. Galerie Posthuys in De Koog exhibits artists who take the landscape and nature as their starting point. There are changing exhibitions, which can be found in our agenda. Artist and designer Angelina van der Vliet exhibits and sells her works in her gallery in Den Burg. Beautiful Texel works are also often on display in De Hoeksteen Den Hoorn), Strender Vermaning (Oosterend) and the Kunstboet (Den Burg). And are you already familiar with the Eiland Galerij in Zuid Eierland?
Always check the opening hours first!
In our agenda you will find a current list of all exhibitions and shows on the island.
