Several species of orchids grow wild on Texel. The wide variety of orchids attracts flower lovers and botanists from all over the world!
You will find many species of wild orchids on the island, from common to very rare. Some orchids that occur are broad orchid (dactylorhiza majalis), reed orchid (dactylorhiza praetermissa), harlequin (orchis morio), flesh-coloured orchid (dactylorhiza incarnata) and spotted orchid (dactylorhiza maculata).
Orchids can be found in the various nature reserves, but also sometimes just along the road. Good locations to look for orchids are Waalenburg (especially the broad orchid, but also the harkelin), De Muy (e.g. spotted orchid, broad orchid and reed orchid), and the Alloo nature reserve next to Ecomare (spotted orchid). They can also be seen in De Dennen, the dune valleys of the Horspolders and the Roggesloot nature meadows. Do pay attention to whether the paths along which they are found are accessible. Some paths are closed due to the breeding season or fragile nature.
Different orchids have different flowering periods. You can find them from mid-May to the end of July. If you like to look for orchids during your holiday, it is best to book it in June.
Orchids in most cases depend not only on certain insects, but also on fungus. The seeds of most species can only germinate in the right soil and a specific soil fungus must be present. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to grow these flowers in your own garden.
Wild orchids are very fragile and can be easily damaged. Therefore, it is important to only look at them and not pick or take them. Are you going to see orchids? Then don't forget your camera, because they are very photogenic!
