The car parks at Jan Ayeslag (Paal 12) and Westerslag (Paal 15) are getting a major facelift. This means less trouble from drifting sand, better drainage and dry parking areas, even after a heavy shower. The work will be completed by mid-March 2025.
The parking areas will be raised: about half a metre on average and two metres in some places. This will allow rainwater to run off better and make sand less likely to blow over the car parks. There will be a solid, semi-open paving that can easily be adjusted in the future if necessary. In cooperation with the Forestry Commission, a strip of plants will be planted, which in turn will be good for insects in the area.
Parking will soon be a lot easier and safer. One-way traffic will be introduced and parking will be diagonal, making it easier to get in and out and making better use of space. The bicycle sheds will be extended and improved, and at Paal 15 the route from the cycle path will be adapted for a smoother flow. Also smart: casing pipes are being laid now for future charging stations and sustainable carports.
During the works, the beach pavilions near these poles are less accessible by car. But don't worry: you can get there on foot or by bike. Only parking at Paal 12 and Paal 15 is therefore temporarily not possible.
Climate change is causing more extreme rainfall and rising sea levels. The car parks are located in lee areas where water easily accumulates and sand quickly drifts. This causes inconvenience for visitors and unnecessary costs when it comes to maintaining the areas. So these renovations address those problems.
At Paal 20, work is underway on a new sand bridge at Kogerstrand campsite. This bridge will replace the old one, which was closed in 2021 due to unsafe conditions. The new access road should provide better accessibility to the beach and surrounding facilities. It is expected that the sand bridge can be commissioned before the start of the 2025 tourist season, depending on the progress of the works.
In the coming years, other parking areas at beach entrances will also be raised and redesigned. This will be done together with Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier, Rijkswaterstaat, the Province of North Holland and Staatsbosbeheer.
