A new three-metre-wide cycle path has been constructed in the Schettersweid area, which partly goes over water.
The old cycle path through Schettersweid was in poor condition. However, it was in Natura 2000 territory. Modification of the cycle path was only possible in combination with nature development projects of the Forestry Commission in the area, as this would allow nature restoration to take place at the same time. The new cycle path no longer cuts across the grassland full of wild orchids and other special species. The modifications will also allow more fresh water to be retained in De Dennen. This will allow this nature reserve to contribute to the consequences of climate change, such as the mitigation of drought and flooding.
The new cycle path through Schettersweid and Tureluur totals 1.7 kilometres and runs from Grensweg to Botgrasweg. Where previously cyclists on Ploeglanderweg had to cycle through an open plain, the path has now been shifted under the shelter of trees. The resulting open plain will be laid out as a robust nature reserve where species such as broad and spotted orchid, as well as rare species such as tar gouache, sundew and marsh fritillary will have better opportunities.
Want to try out the bike path over water for yourself? Then navigate to cycle junction 46 on the Cycle Junction Map, or cycle from Rozendijk or Randweg via the Tureluur area to Ploeglanderweg, so that you end up at the beginning of the 'cycle bridge'.
