Wednesday, April 12, 2023 The Delft painter Johannes Vermeer's oeuvre of about 35 paintings is known, even though connoisseurs do not agree on all attributions. Of that small number of works, the Rijksmuseum has managed to bring 28 to Amsterdam for a major retrospective that will be on view until early June. Never before have so many paintings of the painter been together. Vermeer is known for his tranquil interior scenes, his perfect compositions, his soft light and perhaps above all for the mysterious atmosphere he knew how to create. A sip from a glass of wine, milk flowing from a jug, a letter about to slip from a hand; with Vermeer, an action is rarely just an action, but part of a story. What exactly is that story? Vermeer rarely gives that away easily. Undoubtedly, this is precisely why his work has fascinated generations of painters. In this lecture you will get an overview of Vermeer's oeuvre, his style and his subjects.
